El pol\u00edmero fue descubierto en 1872 por Eugen Baumann cuando observ\u00f3 que algo de cloruro de vinilo en un matraz hab\u00eda comenzado a polimerizarse en un s\u00f3lido blanco durante la exposici\u00f3n al sol. Sin embargo, el uso de PVC en productos comerciales se generaliz\u00f3 solo despu\u00e9s de que BF Goodrich Company desarrollara un m\u00e9todo para plastificar el pol\u00edmero r\u00edgido y quebradizo mezclando PVC con varios aditivos.<\/p><p>El PVC es un pol\u00edmero de costo relativamente bajo con buena resistencia qu\u00edmica y biol\u00f3gica y excelente trabajabilidad. Sin embargo, el pol\u00edmero no modificado siempre debe convertirse en un compuesto mezcl\u00e1ndolo con aditivos como estabilizadores de calor y UV, retardadores de llama, supresores de humo, plastificantes, auxiliares de procesamiento, modificadores de impacto, modificadores t\u00e9rmicos, pigmentos y rellenos. La elecci\u00f3n de los aditivos depende de la funcionalidad requerida, dictada por la aplicaci\u00f3n respectiva.<\/p><p>Cuando se expone al calor (&gt; 100o C), el HCl se elimina de la columna vertebral del pol\u00edmero. Este HCl desencadena un proceso de degradaci\u00f3n autocatal\u00edtica adicional, lo que provoca una r\u00e1pida decoloraci\u00f3n y fragilizaci\u00f3n del PVC. Los estabilizadores t\u00e9rmicos pueden aumentar en gran medida la estabilidad t\u00e9rmica mediante varios mecanismos, como la eliminaci\u00f3n de mol\u00e9culas de HCl liberadas.\u00a0<\/p><p>El tipo de estabilizador t\u00e9rmico que se utiliza depende de la aplicaci\u00f3n y la estabilidad t\u00e9rmica requerida.
